This morning, I was thinking about some of the great connections I have made lately with Twitter, and I wanted to share more about a great cause that is doing unique and incredible things.
Kids Are Heroes was started by Gabe O’Neill and his daughter MaryMargaret, because she wanted him to help her start a website to help animals. He said, “Why not help people, too?”, and a great idea was born! The simple, yet very important, purpose of this organization is to showcase kids on their website who are doing great things to help causes that they care about. What adds a heroic quality to these kids is that they were not told which causes to support or how to support them. They simply saw a need somewhere and stepped in to do what they could to support it.
Let’s meet some of the heroes:
- Blare Gooch saw a child in Haiti crying on TV after the earthquakes and wanted to give him a hug. That wasn’t going to be possible, so Blare started collecting teddy bears. The number grew until he had over 32,000 bears to send to the children in Haiti!
- Ricky Springer is an 8 year old with a disorder that does not allow his body to process food proteins. Because of his difficulties in finding a diagnosis and treatment, he decided to use his experience as a dirt track go-kart racer and started the Racing for a Cause campaign to educate others about the condition.
- Jackson is a very special 6 year old boy from the UK. He also wanted to do something to help after seeing the earthquake devastation in Haiti. He organized a bike ride in their community. The number of participants got to be so much that they had to obtain a permit from the town council. Jackson’s admirable work raised £1,200 for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
These are just a few of the inspiring kids you will find on the Kids Are Heroes website. I encourage you to take some time to learn more about what they are doing and how you can help them continue to show the world that “Kids are indeed heroes and each one has the power to change the world.”
